059 Matthew

On Thursday, 9th November, our President, Matthew Elliott, delivered a special lecture, ‘In Praise of Business.

Throughout history, business has been at the heart of social and economic development. From the gramophone to iPhone, combustion engine to search engine, entrepreneurs and business leaders have been at the forefront of social progress. Current opinion research polling shows that the British public now has a significantly more negative view of business than they did in the past, viewing it with more suspicion than people in both America and even France.

In his 30-minute lecture, Matthew Elliott explored how this has come about, examining how business is portrayed by academic institutions, in schools, the media, film and television, politicians and government. He then outlined the moral and empirical case for business as a force for good in society and explained what can be done to change public attitudes, so policy makers properly recognise the essential role of business in creating prosperity.
